KHSF Spring Program
May 24, 2005
2:15 P.M
The KHSF will have our spring program at the KHA Annual Convention. The program will be from 2:15 to 4:15 on Tuesday, May 24 at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville. The program will include a presentation from Ron Crouch from the Kentucky State Data Center.
The mandated mission of the Kentucky State Data Center is to disseminate Census data across Kentucky so decision makers and citizens can make informed decisions as they plan for today and tomorrow. Certainly healthcare planners and marketers need sound information as they plan for their workforces, their services and their financial health. Mr. Crouch will use his time to demonstrate the availability and value of the data resources available to the healthcare community in planning and preparing for workforce and patient issues.
One component of KSDC's work is making Census data more user friendly. While US Census data can often be confusing and cumbersome to analyze, the KSDC converts the data into a much more user-friendly format.
The Kentucky State Data Center (KSDC) has and continues to develop many products- see the KSDC Homepage, - including historical trends data, comparison tables, GIS maps, Census profiles, etc. down to the city and county level to help leaders and citizens better understand Kentucky. Mr. Crouch has also on his own time, with the help of his daughter, developed national and state-by-state products to better understand where Kentucky stands across the United States.
Attendees will also receive a brief update on possible changes or updates to the Kentucky State Health Plan and Certificate of Need Program by Nancy Galvagni, Senior Vice President of the Kentucky Hospital Association.
KHSF Academic Scholarship
The KHSF offers a scholarship to students with interest in
healthcare planning and marketing. The $1,000 award will be given in the
fall of the year, and applications are due by August 1, 2005. The committee
reviewing the applications includes Mary Jo Bean, Amy Davenport, Patricia
Mason, and David Miller.
The applicants are required to submit a statement of their career plans, a
transcript, letters of recommendation, and a completed application. Letters
outlining the process have been sent to over 25 colleges and universities in
the state. If you would like to forward an application to a potential
recipient, please contact David Miller at (502)814-1188 or via
email.
State Health Plan Review
The Kentucky State Health Plan will be up for review in the coming weeks by the Office of Certificate of Need and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. The purpose of this document is to set forth the review criteria to be used when reviewing applications for certificates of need for consistency with plans pursuant to KRS 216B.040; and for determining whether a substantial change to a health service has occurred. The date and time for a public hearing on the State Health Plan will be announced on the Cabinet for Health and Family Services website.
KHSF Membership Survey
Thank you to everyone who participated in the KHSF Membership Survey. Board members made calls in February to current KHSF members to gather information on the types of programs needed over the next year. We had a great response! We learned that members would like to hear more about physician/hospital relationships, hospital-owned physician practices, recruitment, basic strategic planning, imaging, projections of future business, marketing, how to effect market-share and demographics. You will be glad to learn that the KHSF Spring Program will focus on demographics and projecting future business. We also learned that there is an interest among members to conduct an additional summer program and possibly in a different part of the state. A few members suggested that we consider holding a program by webinar to accommodate members who are not able to travel away from work for a full day.
If you have any suggestions regarding programming, please contact Elizabeth Cobb at 502-426-6220 or by email.
Membership Renewal Letters
KHSF membership renewal letters are being mailed this week to current KHSF members. If you are not a current member but would like to learn more about becoming a member, please contact John Mark Fones at 270-745-1510 or by email.

July 2005: Methodist Hospital in Henderson, Kentucky, plans to break ground for the construction of a South Tower on the southwest side of the Hospital, facing the Ohio River. Initial construction will involve three floors of a proposed seven floor South Tower which will be completed in phases.
A major focus of the South Tower Project will involve the first floor, which has been designed to include a new Department of Surgical Services. The new areas will incorporate surgical prep, a waiting room, several operating rooms and treatment rooms. The ground floor will eventually include a new Dietary Department and Cafeteria, Pharmacy, Central Supply, Admissions, Gift Shop/Volunteer Services, and new Riverside Entrance and Lobby. Initially, a new patient entrance will be constructed along with a drive-through canopy which will lead patients to Admissions and Surgical Services.
Future plans for the second floor of the South Tower are a new and enlarged Obstetrics/Nursery/Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The goal of this first phase will be to complete the Surgical Services area and, as funds become available, to complete all or a portion of the new Riverside entrance and lobby.
