Update from Your Board
The Kentucky Healthcare Strategy Forum board held a retreat on December 4 to address the goals and priorities of the organization.  One clear need is better communication with our members, and this newsletter is our first such effort.

KHSF Sponsors Symposium on Consumer Driven Health Plans (CDHP)
Growing concern about the need to control healthcare costs has focused attention on the role the consumer plays in influencing those costs. Healthcare “consumerism” is beginning to change the way many employers provide for health plan benefits and will play an ever-increasing role in how treatment decisions are made, and ultimately, how healthcare providers deliver and compete for business.

In an effort to shed more light on this rapidly evolving subject, on December 5th KHSF sponsored a symposium called “Consumer Driven Health Plans – Why the Buzz?”  A crowd of about 40 people from employer groups, provider groups and managed care organizations gathered at the Marriott East in Louisville and heard presentations on the latest healthcare trends and the growth of healthcare consumerism and CDHP’s.  Included were updates from insurers concerning the development of their consumer directed products.

From the conference the following became very clear:

bulletManaged care had limited success in addressing the healthcare cost management issue and the development of more consumer-driven health plan products is an outgrowth of that
bulletCompanies that currently offer CDHP’s are seeing dramatic growth
bulletThere is a definite movement by insurance plans in Kentucky to have their own CDHP products
bulletThe movement to a more consumer-centric healthcare system is irreversible
bulletProviders will have to adapt to this new environment in order to compete for the consumer’s business. This will include what services are developed and offered in the future and how those services are marketed and delivered.  As one presenter stated, “Gee Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore”

We were pleased with the turnout and content of the symposium and are considering a follow-up for next year.  Hopefully you’ll be able to join us.

Planning Retreat
The December 4 planning retreat was designed to refocus and improve the KHSF.  Among the priorities set were:
  1. Develop an annual calendar of events to communicate to members
  2. Develop education programs, and communicate those programs, on a timely basis
  3. Refocus and improve our membership campaign, and improving our mailing lists
  4. More clearly delineate the responsibilities and accountabilities of each board member
  5. More frequent board meetings to facilitate board decisions
  6. Complete semi-annual surveys to determine how we can better serve member needs
  7. Communicate more effectively with members, through e-newsletters, the web site, distribution of minutes, etc.
Member Survey
To better meet your needs, the board is going to send out a semi-annual electronic survey to address the needs of the members.  The initial focus will be on education programs of interest and what we can do to facilitate networking among the members.  Watch for that survey, which will come from our secretary Amy Davenport.
